VIVA ZAPATA 1952
The life and times of the legendary Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata are brought to the screen in Darryl F. Zanuck's powerful production of John Steinbeck's screenplay. Marlon Brando, fresh from his success in A Streetcar Named Desire, gives a stunning portrayal of the outlaw turned revolutionary leader. The film also boasts Anthony Quinn's 1952 Best Supporting Actor OSCAR-Winning performance as Zapata's brother. Viva Zapata! is one of the classic political movies and another fine example of Brando's genius as a film actor.
OF MICE AND MEN 1992
John Steinbeck’s classic comes magnificently to life in this beautiful and stirring film starring Oscar® nominees John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. Directed by Sinise from an adaptation by Oscar® winner Horton Foote, this "flawless miracle of movie-making" (Susan Granger, "American Movie Classics") is a must-see for all audiences. Best friends Lennie (Malkovich) and George (Sinise) find themselves unemployed in Depression-era California, unable to keep jobs because of Lennie’s childlike mentality. But once they get hired at the Tyler Ranch, they enjoy a brief period of stability – until their supervisor’s wife (Sherilyn Fenn) becomes the victim of Lennie’s compassion, forcing George to make a compassionate decision of his own.
THE GRAPES OF WRATH 1940
This remarkable film version of Steinbeck's novel was nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including for Best Picture, Actor (Henry Fonda), Film Editing, Sound and Writing. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar® and actress Jane Darwell won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ma Joad, the matriarch of the struggling migrant farmer family. Following a prison term he served for manslaughter, Tom Joad returns to find his family homestead overwhelmed by weather and the greed of the banking industry. With little work potential on the horizon of the Oklahoma dust bowls, the entire family packs up and heads for the promised land (California). But the arduous trip and harsh living conditions they encounter offer little hope, and family unity proves as daunting a challenge as any other they face.
TORTILLA FLAT 1942
Pilon, Danny, the Pirate - paisanos all - live a free-spirited life near seaside Monterey. Then Danny becomes a man of property, the heir to two modest houses and a watch from his grandfather. Too bad that inheritance isn't something worthwhile, like wine or money. But a gorgeous, newly arrived cannery worker named Sweets thinks a man of property may himself be worthwhile...and marriageable. Spencer Tracy, John Garfield, Hedy Lamarr, Frank Morgan bring Hollywood gloss to this affectionate adaptation of John Steinbeck's breakthrough novel (and Morgan was a Best Supporting Actor Oscar® nominee for his charming work).
CANNERY ROW 1982
Nick Nolte and Debra Winger star in this whimsical romance based on John Steinbeck's novellas Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. Among the derelicts, dreamers and outcasts living in 1940s Monterey, California's Cannery Row are Doc (Nolte – Hotel Rwanda, The Prince of Tides), a marine biologist with a past he wishes to forget, and Suzy (Winger – Shadowlands, Terms of Endearment), a drifter who takes up residence in the bordello across the street from Doc. They fall in love, but for these two strong-willed, independent people, romance is not going to be easy.
